5 Proven Ways to Get Reviews for Your Self Published Book
Author Pilot · February 1, 2025
Getting reviews for your self published book is one of the biggest challenges authors face. Amazon and other retailers rely on reviews for visibility and credibility. Here are five proven ways to get those reviews without breaking the rules or buying them.
1. Build an ARC reader list
ARC readers are people who receive your book before or at launch and agree to post an honest review. They’re one of the most reliable ways to get your first batch of reviews. Start by inviting readers from your email list, social media, or a previous launch. Be clear about the timeline and that you want an honest review, not a guaranteed five stars. Send the book one to two weeks before launch so they have time to read. A small list of 15–20 committed readers can often yield 5–15 reviews in the first few weeks.
2. Use a launch team
A launch team is a group of readers who commit to helping you on launch week. They might leave reviews, share your book on social media, or both. You can overlap this with your ARC list: the same people might get the book early and then post their review and share when the book goes live. The key is to make it easy for them (clear links, one place to submit or confirm their review) and to thank them afterward.
3. Leverage your email list
If you have a newsletter, your subscribers are your best bet for early reviews. They’ve already opted in and are more likely to follow through. Send them an ARC or a launch-day email with a direct link to your book’s Amazon page and a short note asking for an honest review if they’ve read it. Don’t ask only for five stars; ask for their real opinion. That keeps you compliant and builds trust.
4. Join a book review platform
A book review platform connects authors with readers (often other authors) who are willing to read and review. You list your book, set the terms (e.g. purchase, Kindle Unlimited, or ARC), and reviewers claim it. When they post their review, you verify it and they earn points to get their own books reviewed. This is a sustainable way to get reviews for your self published book over time. It doesn’t replace an ARC list or launch team, but it adds another channel and can help with backlist and future releases.
5. Combine channels for best results
Most authors get the best results by combining two or more of these. Use ARC readers and a launch team for your launch so you have early book reviewers from day one. Use your email list to remind and thank them. Then join an amazon review exchange for authors or another book review services for authors to keep building reviews on your current and future books. That way you’re not dependent on a single method, and you keep growing your review count over time.
